My Personal Statement
I chose to study Psychology to better understand how people learn, develop, and experience the world. My education has helped me connect psychological concepts with the practical work of supporting people with different abilities, needs, and goals.
As a Day Program Director, I help coordinate services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I also assist with new service applications, support client licensing processes, and help prepare the program for state inspections. This work has shown me how important patience, respect, communication, and careful follow-through are to providing effective support.
I am a bilingual English- and Spanish-speaking professional, an Air Force veteran, and a mother. My experiences have taught me to be dependable, adaptable, and attentive to others' needs. I value treating people with dignity and recognizing their individual strengths and potential.
My goal is to continue growing in work that supports people with disabilities and helps them participate as fully as possible in their communities. I am especially interested in applying what I learn in Psychology to person-centered services, education, and opportunities for lifelong growth.

4. ACADEMIC SAMPLES
Academic Sample 1: Industrial and Organizational Psychology
Course: PSYC 3145 — Industrial and Organizational Psychology
Assignment title: “Can You Lift 50 Pounds?”: Amazon Fulfillment and Sorting Centers
Assignment date: 10/02/1016
Format: Presentation
Summary
In this presentation, I examine whether Amazon's hiring practices for fulfillment and sorting-center jobs accurately reflect the work's physical demands. Drawing on my experience working at Amazon during holiday seasons, I describe tasks such as lifting, bending, standing, walking, and moving packages. I connect these observations to research on job analysis, physical ability testing, realistic job previews, applicant reactions, and equal-opportunity considerations.
I recommend basing any assessment on a careful analysis of essential job tasks and using realistic job previews, task-based assessments, relevant safety training, ongoing validation, and clear accommodation procedures.
Why I included this sample
I chose this project because it connects my firsthand work experience with concepts from Industrial and Organizational Psychology. It demonstrates my ability to consider how hiring and selection practices can affect job fit, safety, fairness, and employee retention. It also reflects my interest in using research to evaluate workplace practices and develop practical recommendations.
Academic Sample 2: Theories of Personality
Course: PSYC 4455 — Theories of Personality
Assignment title: Case Study 4: The Jungian Archetype That Most Influences Mark
Assignment date: 09/19/2026
Format: Essay
Full sample
Mark is most influenced by the hero archetype. The hero’s greatest desire is to conquer danger, achieve great things, and save others from trouble. The hero protects others. Mark has chosen a path that reflects the hero through his work in the fire department. The high-stakes, competitive, and sometimes thankless work of the fire department draws Mark again and again because it demands his very best. He is most engaged when he responds to emergencies, helps people in crisis, and uses his skills to navigate difficult and unexpected rescue situations. His peers' admiration and the younger children at the local elementary school feed his sense of purpose and reflect the respect he earns as a protector.
This is also evident in Mark's growth. As a child, he imagined powerful protectors with great authority who fought extraordinary adversity. To become the kind of adult he wanted to be, Mark pursued a difficult public job despite his parents' and others' fear and suspicion about his safety and independence. Rather than stop at saving others in dramatic, dire circumstances, Mark continually applies his practical skills to make his workplace safer and better for everyone.
Summary
In this case study, I identify the hero archetype as the strongest influence on Mark. I explain how his work as a firefighter, his emergency responses, and his efforts to protect others reflect the hero’s drive to face danger and help people in crisis. I also discuss how his childhood admiration for powerful protectors and his ongoing efforts to make his workplace safer connect to this archetype.
Why I included this sample
I selected this assignment because it shows how I apply a personality theory to a specific case. It shows how I use examples from a person’s work, childhood interests, and actions to support a personality interpretation.
